Keeping kids Healthy

Pedal toys are a wonderful way for children to get the exercise they need to be healthy and productive throughout the day. It is these very simple and classic pedal toys that can give toddlers and young children all the fun they need, while keeping them active and wholesome. Unfortunately, too many children are filling their downtime by playing computer and video games and remaining indoors, staying

in a sedentary position. While some interactive computer and video games have educational benefits, they certainly do not make up for quality time outdoors, burning energy and letting off steam.

Pedal toys are a broad term that refers to outdoor toys that can move around by being pedaled. The toys include a set of pedals, one for each foot of course, and they come in a wide array of vehicles. Some of the most popular pedal toys include cars and tractors and now even Trains and planes.

The cars are especially wide-ranging, with some looking like vintage cars and hot rods. Pedal toys are perfect for older toddlers and preschoolers, as the pedals take some coordination and balance. As an added benefit, pedal cars can serve as a precursor for learning how to ride a Tricycles or later a bike. In this way, preschoolers can go through the motions of pedaling without parents having to worry about them tipping over on a tricycle.

Besides pedal cars, there are also plenty of toddler ride-on toys that are perfect for little ones, even those who are still gaining their balance. Ride-on toys also include an extensive collection of vehicles, some equipped with horns, streamers and lights. These toys are perfect for the younger crowd, as they don’t need to be pedaled and instead get around by tots pushing with their legs and feet. Some require more balance than others, but all encourage the use of leg and feet muscles.
Both pedal cars and ride-on toys are so much fun that kids will forget that they are actually being active and exercising. Indeed, these toys are best when used outdoors, so your child will be getting fresh air and sunshine right off the bat. Ride-on toys promote the use of large motor skills, helping toddlers to gain balance and

coordination. Pedaling motions help little ones to have better control over walking and running, while strengthening the muscles and encouraging endurance. Best of all, these fun toys build creativity and role play, so kids can pretend they are driving a real car or are a rescuing firefighter. Why not encourage your children or grandchildren to get outside in the fresh air by purchasing them a ride-on toy for their next birthday or Christmas.

Pedal Car Gifts Help Your Child Develop Great Motor Skills
By Kerry McFadden

Motor skills are developed in children through repeatedly engaging in physical activities that require using more then one sense and movement at a time. This can only be achieved with physical movement. This helps children gain control over their movements, helps them to learn anticipatory results, postural control, and how one action affects another action. Utilizing pedal cars and pedal toys as part of your child's play and exercise will help your toddler build great motor skills.

Learning motor skills requires using both mental and physical action. Riding a pedal car also requires both mental and physical action. Mentally your child is developing skills in drive and persistence. Thy learn that turning the steering wheel one way will make them go in that direction but only by pedaling at the same time also developing coordination skills. They also learn that when they get stuck they have to come up with a new plan of action to reverse the situation. This is great for developing a healthy attention span as well as problem solving skills. When your child plays on his or her pedal car, they develop their sense of curiosity and the desire to master their new skill. Pedal cars and pedal toys are great food for your toddler's brain.

Physically a toddler has to move in order to make the pedal car move resulting in many great benefits for your child such as:

• Great for the toddler's cardiovascular system
• Moderate to vigorous physical exercise
• Muscle strengthening
• Coordination
• Flexibility
• Endurance
• Strengthen joints
• Motor control and skills

It is important that toddlers get enough play and exercises to continue to develop their motor skills. Pedal cars are a great tool to give your child an activity they can truly enjoy while developing great motor skills. They will help your toddler gain useful skills such a better attention span, problem solving, persistence, achievement, coordination, and an understanding of cause and effect. These are all great things to help your child prepare for moving on into a school setting as well.

Toddlers and preschoolers are continuously developing their motor skills as they grow and they love to show off what they have mastered. When your child masters his or her skill in riding a pedal toy, which they will do and love every minute of, you can be proud in knowing that not only have they achieved their desired goal but also that you have helped them to gain many other valuable skills that will go with them through out their life.
